Ik thinking about buying a used hyper 7 for the nitro season but what's the difference between the 7,8,8.5 and 9??

Generally they are evolutions.

Having run all of them - i can't remember much about the 8/8.5 but between the 7 & 9 they introduced big bore shocks, moved the rear brake off the centre diff, laid down the engine, which they have stood up again on the Hyper Star, different front steering/suspension geometry, different rear geometry. Longer wheel base too i think. The 9 has an option for a 4mm longer wheel base than the kit 9.

The ( includes a nice looking metal radio tub lid which is brilliant for interference so stick with the plastic one.

Pretty sure that the best option would be the 7 - still in production as far as I know, so still loads of easily available spares both new and via that famous auction site.

Like I said in the other thread kicking around on here, at club level the Hyper 7 can be a competative car in the right hands. Plenty of spares available for them which is important and reasonably easy to work on despite having a fair few of everyones favourite fastner, the E clip, on them!

At the end of the day though, if your new to racing then you would be no faster with a Hyper 9 than you would a Hyper 7. Get to the sharp end of the racing with the Hyper 7 and your laughing.
