I got the mad rat for Christmas and before I glue the tyres to the rims, are the standard tyres any good? |

yeah there ok for a start on carpet, best to get some extra sets of wheels so you can experiment with different combinations of front tyres ie stagger ribs cut staggers or mini spikes/pins, the standard ribs up front but can give understeer at times, basically its
ribs - lowest grip stagger ribs cut staggers mini spikes/pins (more likely spikes) - highest grip
dont forget though that 2wd buggys having too much front grip can cause the rear to come round easier, i always prefered a slightly understeery car as its more predictable than a car which can break away alot,
rear tyre wise most people run minipins or similar (dboots terrabytes) or minispikes, but the kit rears are pretty good, tbh will wheels are so cheap for the rat that worth buying a few sets so you can experiment, |

So shall I stick with the ribs at the front or buy some pins or similar? |

For the indoor track you want Schumacher yellow staggered ribs up front, mounted slim on rims with no inserts, Schumacher yellow minipins on back with medium inserts, medium tubby inserts will work best.
No point trying to set a car up or get used to a car on tyres that are not designed for the job. Use kit tyres for bashing if that's what you are into
Minispikes are no good on carpet either as they slide too much.
Outdoors on astro you will use same front tyres and yellow minispikes on back or ballistic buggy greens if it's damp/ wet |

£7.50 for rears, £6.50 fronts and £2.50 for rear inserts
That's a rough price, A1 Hobbies have them in stock with spare wheels if needed.
I ran a madrat last winter so have a good base set up that I can send to Lewis for you to try too. |
