Following tuesdays phantom driver taking control of my buggy, I'm going to upgrade the radio system. Having done a little reading it looks like 2.4ghz is the way to go.
I found what looks like a good deal on a spektrum DX3 at JE Spares. My question is, is it worth spending the extra 45quid for the DX3S? Is the telemetry reliable and worth having? I think it looks better but thats just vanity, something i'm sure i can (try to)overcome!
Also, any idea what the servos are like that come with the DX3? Better than the RTR hobao ones?

I'm sure if you've a mind to, you can justify anything.....I've seen that deal for the Spekkie (and two receivers?) - it's very good - in fact it's good enough to justify NOT spending the extra £45.

Why lumber yourself with more things to think about - and more things to go wrong?
One thing you don't look at whilst racing is your transmitter - and unless you're gonna hang it round your neck whilst you wonder around the pits (and you WILL look a t*t if you do!) - another why bother?

The DX3S is very light/compact and comfortable to use, young Phil uses one. Most people report that the rpm sensor is abit flakey but other functions like engine temperature work really well. The screen is nice and big and makes setting up really easy.

You can check engine temps at any time by looking at the screen and not have to bother with a seperate temp reader that you have to shove on the glow plug. Another nice feature is the timer function which is usefull for longer races where you have to pit stop for fuel.

I use a DX3R which is very simialr to the 3S and find it simple to use. Never had a glitching problems and its comfortable to use for the solid hour that my fuel tank lasts on my Baja.

Tomtom has a DX3 could be worth asking him and young Phil for opinions.

I much prefer the look and feel of the 3S/3R transmitters. The servos packaged with the Transmitter sets are normally very low powered and not a great deal of use tbh.

The DX3.0 is the best thing Ive bought since I started racing. Servos in it are alot better than the hobao ones which come with the hyper's. With the DX3R and S, Ive heard that the selector button is a bit weak, young phil has had his replaced, bit of a design flaw. All of the Spectrum radios have end point adjustment, dual rates, exponential settings e.t.c, so you can set the radio to suit your driving style, and the track.

Thanks guys, I've ordered the DX3 as its significantly cheaper. As long as i'm the only one driving my buggy i'll be happy and if the servos are stronger than the standard hobao throttle servo then thats a bonus.

Good choice Andy - but to be fair, when you were driving you were getting a bit enthusiastic, so it's not all the radio's fault!

I'd like to think i'm enthusiastic about all things 'tuesday night' and i'd never let the radio system take the credit for some of the air (or the spills) off that jump on the back straight! :-)

You get the Z590 and Z270 with the DX3.0 (did with mine anyway). They were just the job for club racing, and have only just replaced the steering servo after over a year of abuse. The servos are rebranded JR ones.
