Howdi doodi. I am new to electric racing so can somebody explain a couple of points. In my strike is a 19t 540 motor with the brushes on the outside of the casing, i also have a 12t 550 and a 15t 550 motor. My esc is the standard Losi one and on it it says 12t. Does this mean I should only use a 12t motor? What does it all mean? which is most powerful and which would be best for my strike (or HMS Strike after Tuesdays rolly polly racing with it). I would like to go brushless at some point but perhaps not in this truck. Any help would be welcome. Ian |

Howdoo Ian,
In Ye Olde 540 type brushed motors... 12T is on the fast end of the scale, a standard 540 Tamiya kit type silver can is 27T and slower, basically the lower the number of Turns the faster the motor.
A 12T 550 motor is roughly equivalent to a 17T 540 Motor, logic says it should be faster than your 19T 540 motor... but... your 550 will have no or little timing advance and will be running bronze bushes rather than ballbearings so... the 19T will be faster i would have thought, depending on gearing of course.
The motors with external brush springs and brushes have a timing advance to make them quicker/more torque, you can normally take them apart and 'skim' them/replace brushes etc when they wear.
The stock Losi speedo will be fine with the 19T motor, just don't run it with reverse and if it spins backwards when leads are properly connected then undo the 'endbell' and flip it round 180 degrees... thats why i had flames and smoke pouring out the Traxxas motor in several races at Carnage 2010!
There is only one way to find out... try them back to back on the same gearing with same batteries and see which one is quicker.
The Losi 12T 550 is quite good with kit gearing and 7.4V LiPo's, more than adequate indoors and plenty for you to get used to the truck.
hope this helps,
Mark. |
